The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves football team celebrated homecoming in style, defeating the Lone Tree Lions 54-14 Friday night. After a 16-7 lead in the first quarter, WMU pushed that advantage to three scores at halftime, and blew the game open by outscoring Lone Tree 16-0 in the third period.

The Wolves ran wild, piling up 324 rushing yards and averaging almost seven yards per carry. Junior Cam Buffington finished with 174 yards and three touchdowns on 19 rushes, while fellow junior Abram Edwards ran for 58 yards; had 65 more yards receiving; and scored twice.

Buffington also lead the WMU defense with nine tackles. Despite a strong night from junior quarterback Ethan Bockelman running the ball, Lone Tree struggled on offense. Bockelman had 121 yards and a TD on the ground, but the rest of the Lions ran for just 11 yards combined. Bockelman also completed less than half of his pass attempts for 76 yards and was intercepted once. Freshman receiver Emmett Burke had the only other score of the game for Lone Tree, hauling in four total catches for 30 yards.

The loss snaps a three-game win streak for Lone Tree, as the Lions fall to 3-2 ahead of hosting undefeated WACO. Winfield-Mount Union improves to 4-2 with the homecoming victory and will next host Tri-County.
