The Washington Demons cross country team was historically triumphant in their home meet Tuesday evening, winning both the boys’ and girls’ team titles and nearly bringing home each individual championship as well. Junior Micah Rees won his fourth straight meet with a time of 16 minutes and 17.75 seconds, while freshman Iris Dahl continued a brilliant debut campaign by finishing second in the girls’ race at 20 minutes and 15 seconds.

It was a banner day for the Demons, with 16 total runners earning a medal. 10 Washington girls medaled, as sophomores Quincy Griffis, Lauren Horak  and Alyvia Anderson finished third, fifth and sixth, respectively. Freshman Angeline Anderson was ninth; sophomores Kendall Hinrichsen and Isabella Lujan were 11th and 12th; senior Grace Voss finished 16th. Junior Abigail Kleese rounded out the medalists in 20th as the Demons won by whopping 52 points, with 25 points being tied for the best team score for a meet in school history.

On the boys’ end, Washington sophomore Tyler Alderton and freshman Andrew Rees ended up fifth and sixth, respectively. Senior Drew Horak and juniors Lane Schrock and Andrew Shepherd rounded out three of the final four spots in the top 15 as Washington edged out Fort Madison for the boys’ team crown by seven points.

Other runners from the area fared well at Washington Golf & Country Club. Lone Tree sophomore Vivian Zaruba medaled by finishing 15th in the girls’ 5k with a time of just under 22 minutes and 20 seconds. Fellow Lion sophomore Taylor Alberhasky finished the boys’ course in 22 minutes and 11 seconds.

The top finisher for the Highland Husky boys was junior Jackson Schnieder in almost 22 minutes and 17 seconds, while senior Brendan Schnobelen finished in over 22-and-a-half minutes. Highland freshman Siena Stanerson ran the girls’ race in 23 minutes and 46 seconds, with teammate Erika Thomann 52 seconds off that pace.

WACO Warriors sophomore Keriran Luitjens ran the boys’ course in just over 19 minutes, with fellow sophomore Isaac Rich clocking in 42 seconds later. WACO’s top girls’ finish went to senior McKenzie Vradenburg in nearly 25-and-a-half minutes, followed by sophomore Justine Lynn in just under 26.
