fire-prevention

Students from Winfield-Mt. Union, Grandview, and Sigourney were just some of the kids who got the opportunity to visit their local fire departments this week. Students had the chance to explore the vehicles, try on some gear, and speak with firefighters about fire safety and prevention.

Visits like these help students recognize Fire Prevention Week, which ends this Saturday. Fire Prevention Week, celebrating its 100th year, began in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This year’s theme is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.” Fire departments across the country encourage citizens to take time this week to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and prepare a fire escape plan for their homes.
