Another banner day for the Washington Demons cross country teams resulted in Southeastern Conference championships. Both the Demon boys and girls won the team titles at the SEC meet Thursday in Fairfield, and junior Micah Rees won the boys’ individual title by finishing the course in 16 minutes and 40 seconds. He was 24 seconds faster than the second-place runner.
Even as the Demons edged out Fort Madison by three points for the team title, Micah Rees was joined with all-conference honors by two other Washington boys. Sophomore Tyler Alderton finished seventh in 17 minutes and 51 seconds, while junior Lane Schrock was ninth in 17:52. Freshman Andrew Rees just missed the medal stand but ran a strong time of 18:04 in 11th.
On the girls’ side, Washington dominated, winning the team title by 31 points over Fairfield and getting six runners to earn all-conference. Freshman Iris Dahl was the individual runner-up with a time of 20 minutes and 12 seconds. Sophomore Alyvia Anderson crossed the finish line 46 seconds later to earn third, and fellow soph Quincy Griffis finished fourth one second after that. Sophomore Kendall Hinrichsen was eighth in 21:18, with classmate Lauren Horak 14 seconds off that pace for ninth and freshman Angeline Anderson 15 seconds behind to round out the top 10.
The Demons, who are eighth in the girls’ 3A team rankings and 17th on the boys’ end, wrap up the regular season with multiple school records smashed and back-to-back team conference championships. Washington will look to keep up a historic season when they host a 3A state qualifying meet Wednesday at Washington Golf & Country Club
