At the beginning of the October 4th Washington City Council meeting, a mayoral proclamation was held to declare October 2022 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Washington. This was done in partnership with the Mayor of Coralville, Meghan Foster, and the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, which has worked to end violence in intimate relationships for more than 40 years through collaborative partnerships with municipalities.
Mayor Rosien spoke with KCII Radio about the overall goal of this proclamation and others like it. “The goal of the proclamation is to raise awareness about an issue that is worth examining. In the case of domestic violence, it’s often behind closed doors and swept underneath the rug. So, this proclamation for the month of October starts the conversation about domestic violence and how it has a ripple effect of serious consequences.”
Mayor Rosien also noted how mental health and substance abuse issues seem to be driving factors behind domestic violence. If you would like to hear more from Mayor Rosien about the proclamation and what was discussed at the October 4th City Council meeting, you can listen to the October 14th edition of the Halcyon House Washington Page online at KCIIradio.com.
The next meeting of the Washington City Council will be today at 6:00 pm in the Council Chambers at Washington City Hall.
