A former Winfield-Mount Union player is returning home to lead the Wolf Pack. WMU alumnus Mendy McCreight will be the Wolves’ new girls’ basketball head coach beginning this season. McCreight takes over for Mitch Wachs, the legendary Winfield-Mount Union head coach who won over 400 games and back-to-back state titles in 1995 and 1996. McCreight was part of WMU teams under Wachs that made the Class 1A state semifinals in ’97 and ’98 and tells KCII Sports that she learned a lot from the IGCA Hall of Famer.

“[It is] pretty big shoes to fill,” McCreight says. “I enjoyed being coached under Coach Wachs. He taught me so much. He’s been excellent at helping me and answering any questions I have. I’m pretty pumped and excited to take over the role and hopefully do as well as he did.”

After playing at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, McCreight has done plenty of winning in her time as a head coach. At Southwest Valley in Corning, McCreight guided the Timberwolves to a regional final in 2018 and 46 wins since 2017. Winfield-Mount Union won 19 games and reached the 1A Region 6 semifinals last season but only needs to replace two graduated seniors.
