The rich history of Winfield-Mount Union girls’ basketball is expected to continue, even with some changes in the program. The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves open a new season by playing back-to-back nights starting tonight.

WMU alum Mendy McCreight takes over for the legendary Mitch Wachs as head coach and will have a ton of talent back from a team that went 19-5 last season and has double-digit wins in four of the last five seasons. Junior forward Bradie Buffington returns after leading the Wolves with 15 points, nine-and-a-half rebounds and one blocked shot per game. Junior guard Keetyn Townsley comes back after averaging better than 9.5 points and three steals per contest. Point guard Keely Malone is also back to run the show after putting up eight points and five assists a game last season, and junior Melina Oepping provides another solid post presence with better than 7.5 points and nine rebounds per game. McCreight tells KCII Sports all the ingredients are there for a winning formula, but she’s got a few ideas that should spice up this dish as well.

“One of the things that I think will be a strength is our inside game,” McCreight says.”I feel that we can not only be quick, but we have a strong inside with rebounding, and my hope is to take these girls and have an aggressive team that attacks on offense and defense as well. Get those gambles, take those chances [with] fastbreak, playing pressure man-to-man defense and get the game going at our speed.

Winfield-Mount Union will look to improve on their second-place finish in the Super Conference North and regional semifinal ending from last season when they tip off the new campaign at New London tonight. WMU will also be in action tomorrow evening against Central Lee.
