It’s all about the little things for Columbus Wildcats girls’ basketball as they tip off a new season tomorrow night. Columbus is looking for the small improvements before they worry about the big picture, as head coach Kasey Keltner believes prioritizing the fundamentals will eventually help the Wildcats improve on just three wins from last season.
Sophomore Lily Coil has the potential to be a star after averaging eight-and-a-half points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals per game in her debut season. Senior Sera Vela is also on an upwards trajectory after putting up nearly 7.5 points and 2.5 assists a game last season. But Keltner tells KCII Sports every little improvement will be measured as a crucial victory.
“We started at ground zero,” Keltner says, “so passing the ball, catching the ball, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, getting in a stance. All those things it takes to be successful in a game. We saw improvement throughout [last] year. And one of the great things is we have a lot of kids coming back, so we’re not starting from zero. Hopefully we can build off of what last year’s improvement was.”
Columbus returns all but one starter this season. The Wildcats will get things started by taking on the Hillcrest Academy Ravens tomorrow evening.
