The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves have taken their game to another level. After four straight losing seasons in boys’ basketball, Winfield-Mount Union exploded last year to go 21-3; win the Super Conference North with a perfect league record; and make it to the Class 1A Region 5 semifinals. But, with almost everyone back, WMU has its sights set higher this season as they get into action tomorrow night.
The Wolves possess one of the most dynamic duos in the area in juniors Cam Buffington and Abram Edwards. Buffington put up all-state-caliber numbers last year, averaging almost 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot per game. Edwards put up 12 points, nine boards, three assists and two blocks a game as a sophomore. But WMU also features fabulous depth behind their superstar tandem. Guard Jake Edwards averaged seven points and three assists per contest in his first season, and senior Andrew Brown and junior Carter Loyd also return as featured role players. Wolves head coach Klay Edwards tells KCII Sports everything is in place to chase down some big goals.
“We’re definitely excited coming into this season with what he have returning,” Edwards says. “We primarily return all of our production, scoring and rebounding-wise, so it’s exciting having this much young talent back.”
Winfield-Mount Union will begin their highly-anticipated new season tomorrow evening when they host a conference foe in Lousia-Muscatine.
