The season opener could not have gone much better for the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves boys’ basketball team, and a dominant win by the WMU girls completed a sweep of a home doubleheader Tuesday night against Louisa-Muscatine.

In the girls’ game, Winfield-Mount Union won 68-21 and did nearly half of their damage in the first quarter, jumping out to a 31-9 lead. The Wolves also dominated on defense, limiting the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons to single-digit scoring in every quarter. Senior Melina Oepping scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Bradie Buffington put up 12 points and five boards, while fellow senior Keely Malone added 11 points, six assists and four steals to help WMU improve to 4-0.

The Wolves got a new boys’ hoops season started with authority, cruising to an 86-46 victory over L&M. WMU went up 22-6 after a quarter of play and scored at least 18 points in every quarter, largely thanks to hitting a whopping 30 free throws and knocking down eight three-pointers. Junior Cam Buffington was a beneficiary of both those elements, going 11-for-15 at the free-throw line and hitting a pair of triples on his way to a game-high 28 points. Buffington also had seven rebounds and three steals, while junior teammate Abram Edwards put up a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists and sophomore Jake Edwards added 12 points, five boards, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Both the Winfield-Mount Union boys and girls next hit the hardwood when they host Pekin tomorrow evening.
