KCII was able to speak with Senator Grassley and get his thoughts on the upcoming January 6th Committee report. Grassley tells KCII News, “Well, I think it already accomplished something because we have a bill that we hope to get passed before the end of the year that would change the 1886 law that has been used very sparingly, but when it’s been used has created some controversy. The most important thing is to make clear that the Vice President presiding over the joint session of Congress,  when the electoral votes are counted, that he doesn’t have any discretion, that he just counts the votes let it go at that, so it takes care of the problem. But it’s kind of not dealt with in the 1886 law and so there are several changes that we are making to the 1886 law, but I think that would be the most important one. The law that Senator Grassley is referring to is the Electoral Count Act of 1887. It is a federal law that states procedures for the counting of electoral votes by Congress following a Presidential election. The January 6th Committee Report is set to be released by the end of the year.
