Saturday was a success for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls wrestling team as they put together a big day at the Wilton Women’s Wrestling Tournament. The Hawks were third of 16 teams with 139 points. Mount Vernon won the team title with 196 points. Three Golden Hawks won championships on the day including Gabi Robertson at 100lbs who wrapped up a 4-0 day with a championship match fall over Kenadee Helscher of Wapello in 1:42. Ellie Brenneman won the title in the 135A bracket with a 3-0 day that included a fall in the title bout against teammate Marissa Cline in 1:25. Mia Garvey made the top of the podium at 155lbs. Her 3-0 day was capped by a :48 fall over Ava Johnson of Louisa-Muscatine to claim gold. Robertson, Brenneman and Garvey spoke with KCII Sports this week at practice about each of their championship matches.

Stacey said, “My championship (bracket) was very small. It was only two people. I pinned her both rounds.”

Brenneman explained, “My match was against my own teammate Marissa Cline. It’s not really fun to have to beat them. I just brought more aggression. I got the takedown and I got the pin.”

Garvey recalled, “This girl was seeded above me because she had a better record. I did a little bit of a snapdown. She fell over. I put in the half, ran it, and pinned her in the first period.”

Robertson added, “Mine was against a girl from Wapello. I knew she was pretty good. We had beaten some of the same competition. She didn’t come out with the aggression that I thought she was going to. I just took her down and pinned her right away.”

Other top finishes for Mid-Prairie included runners-up Marissa Cline at 135A, Grace Conway at 140, and third for Ashlee Farrier at 130A and Sam Stacey at 235. The Hawks are now off until January 7th when they travel to North Scott.
