Mid-Prairie’s Mia Garvey has put her mark in the record book for Golden Hawks on the mat in school history. Garvey, a senior, became the all-time girls wins leader and all-time girls pins leader earlier this season.

The falls record came first on November 21st of 2022 when Garvey put Cutter Shefelbine of Alburnett’s shoulders to the mat at the West Liberty Tournament in just 41 seconds. The previous record of 29 pins was set by 2021 Golden Hawk grad and state place winner Sarah Meader.

She notched her school record 39th career win at the BGM Round Robin Tournament December 2nd, beating Libby Groom of North Mahaska by fall also in 41 seconds to open the tournament. The previous record was 38 victories in a career, set by Bronwyn Brenneman, 2022 grad and state place winner for the Hawks. Garvey talked recently with KCII sports about the records and what they mean to her. “It feels really special. Most of my matches have ended in pins and I guess I do win a lot. It’s pretty cool to know that I have both of the records for the school. When I first heard, I was standing beside my Dad so, I walked up to him and gave him a high five and a hug. He looked at me and goes ‘You better go tell your Mom’. She was sitting up in the bleachers. So I ran up there and go ‘Mom, guess what! I beat both of the pin and win records!’ And she goes ‘Oh! That’s so great!’. I hugged her and it was a lot of fun. All of the records our family holds are pretty cool. It really shows how my Dad has helped us through all the years and it’s really awesome!”

Garvey recorded her first career win and pin in the same match, a victory on December 16th of 2019 at the Iowa City High Tournament over Molly Wilson of Iowa City West in 2:27. Garvey holds a 47-37 career record at Mid-Prairie with 41 career pins. She is also the school record holder for fastest fall, recording a pin in just seven seconds. The girls wrestle next January 7th at North Scott.
