Some of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s best boys’ basketball players are racking up numbers as good as any other player in the state. Along with sitting atop the Super Conference North, WACO and Winfield-Mount Union have three players that are top-10 in the state in Class 1A in statistical categories.
WACO Warriors junior Hunter Hughes not only has a scoring prowess, but he’s a defensive menace. Along with averaging better than 18 points per game, Hughes has complied 38 steals so far this season for an average of four-and-a-half a game, the third-most in the state in 1A and fifth-most across all classes. Six-foot-six forward Cody Graber has been a dominant post player for the Warriors, especially on defense, where he has blocked 29 shots in seven games, tied for fifth-most in the state. Graber is also shooting 72.5 percent from the field, third-best in 1A.
While WMU junior Cam Buffington can dominate the game in a variety of ways, he has made opponents pay from the free-throw line in particular so far this season. Buffington’s 61 free-throw attempts are second in the state, while his 33 makes are tenth in 1A. Wolves sophomore Jake Edwards is averaging just under five assists per contest, which puts him inside 1A’s top 30.
