The Washington Demons came up short in a pair of basketball contests last night at Burlington Notre Dame. The Washington girls were able to knock down six three-point field goals in the first half and only trailed 34-28 at halftime. But, when the Demons had just four made baskets in the third quarter, Notre Dame found its opening to seize control of the game, and the 10th-ranked team in Class 1A would lead by as much as 19 before getting the 70-54 win. Freshman Adalyn Long led Washington with 15 points scored, while classmate Leighton Messinger added 11, but the Demons still fall to 6-4.
The Washington boys allowed an 8-0 run at the end of the first quarter and the start of the second period that allowed Notre Dame to go in front for good, but the Demons hung around all night. Washington trailed 32-26 at the half and would respond to a 10-point deficit by getting within one point early in the final quarter, but Notre Dame held them off with a 13-5 run that closed out a 58-49 victory. Senior guard Ethan Patterson had a game-high 21 points but was the only player for the Demons with double-figure scoring. Washington drops to 5-5 as both Demon squads next play Friday night at Keokuk.
