The Sigourney Savages earned a pair of non-conference basketball wins against the Highland Huskies Monday night. The Sigourney girls led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and pushed that to an eight-point lead at halftime. Highland just couldn’t get the offense necessary to make a second-half push, as the Savages went on to defeat the Huskies 34-20.
Junior Carly Goodwin led Sigourney with 14 points and three steals to help them improve to 11-7. Sophomore Josephine Moore added eight points and 12 rebounds, but the story of the night was the Savage defense, which held Highland to only five made baskets all game. Junior Sarah Burton’s nine points, nine boards and three blocked shots paced the Huskies, but they still fell to 7-9.
The Sigourney boys took a 19-13 lead after a quarter of play and stayed in front by six at the half. Highland would slice the margin down to a single point entering the final period, but the Savages held on to knock off the Huskies 54-48. Highland shot the ball well, hitting half of their field goal attempts and getting a 22-point performance from senior Logan Bonebrake, but Sigourney had the answers to earn a close win. While the Huskies drop to 1-14, the Savages move up to 9-9.
