The undefeated season rolls on for the Winfield-Mount Union girls’ basketball team, as WMU improved to 18-0 by defeating the Columbus Wildcats 62-27 Friday evening. A 16-9 lead for the Wolves in the first quarter was stretched to 21 points at halftime, and the tenth-ranked team in Class 1A never looked back.

The terrific forward tandem of seniors Bradie Buffington and Melina Oepping were at their best for the Wolves, each posting a double-double. Buffington had a game-high 21 points while pulling down 11 rebounds and blocking three shots. Oepping finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while WMU senior guard Keetyn Townsley also hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points. Columbus sophomore Frannie Sosa had her second straight game with double-figure scoring, as she paced the Wildcats with 11 points, but they still fall to 6-9 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 7-12 overall.

The Winfield-Mount Union boys also defeated Columbus 61-33 Friday, moving to 12-2 in conference play and 13-4 overall. Columbus has just two wins this season, both in league action. While the Wolves next play Tuesday against Highland, the Wildcats next hit the court Thursday against the Huskies.
