This year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Wrestling Championships took place in New London Saturday, and the Columbus Wildcats came away as a big winner. Columbus finished runner-up to Burlington Notre Dame in the team standings thanks to 12 of their 13 wrestlers earning a medal.

Leading the way was Wildcat junior Russell Coil, who brought home the Super Conference championship at 285 pounds by pinning both of his opponents. Junior Ian Estudillo finished second at 113 lbs, as did classmate Ty Scorpil at 120. Sophomore Jacob Nelson took fourth place at 106, while freshman Bowen Thomson earned fifth at 126 classmate Trevor Phillips placed sixth at 132. The majority of Columbus medalists were in third, including senior Dante Zuniga at 145; senior Triston Miller at 152; junior Cole Storm at 160; sophomore Riley Kaalberg at 182; and senior Kai Malone at 220.

The Highland Huskies finished eighth as a team, thanks largely to a conference title for senior Carlos Valenzuela. The fourth-ranked grappler in Class 1A at 132 lbs improved to 44-1 by winning at 132 with two pins and a technical knockout. Freshman Bock Thomann and junior Jack Peiffer took fourth at 126 and 138, respectively, while Husky junior Remington Fields was fifth at 145 and sophomore Landon Bell finished sixth at 106.

The WACO Warriors earned ninth in the team standings and were paced by a pair of runners-up, sophomore Louden Huisenga at 160 lbs and junior Johnathan Heather at 285. Senior Drew Diers took third place at 195, while freshman Trey Edeker finished sixth at 145.
