The Highland Husky girls’ basketball team topped the Columbus Wildcats 59-40 last night in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference showdown. A 19-6 run in the second quarter stretched Highland’s halftime lead to 30-14, proving to be the key point in the game that Columbus could never recover from.

Star junior forward Sarah Burton once again led the Huskies with 17 points scored, while sophomore Kate Herrig knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Senior Jessica Kraus added 10 points to help Highland finish 8-8 in the Super Conference North and get to 9-11 overall. Sophomore Ariana Vergara put up 10 points and five rebounds for the Wildcats, while classmate Lily Coil stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots, but it was not enough to keep the ‘Cats from ending conference play at 6-10 and falling to 7-13 overall. Next up for both teams in the Super Conference Shootout tonight. Highland will go across divisions to face Central Lee, while Columbus will take on Danville.
