The Iowa high school basketball postseason officially gets underway tonight, and a couple of girls’ teams from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference will look to survive and advance on to their regional tournament quarterfinals with wins this evening.

The WACO Warriors claimed the number-four seed in Class 1A Region 8 after going 17-4. Behind senior Ellah Kissell’s 22 points per game, WACO had won five straight before dropping their regular season finale. The Warriors will try to get their second win of the season over the Keota Eagles, who come in with a record of 7-14. Despite senior Macie McDonald’s 10 points a game and nine points and five rebounds per contest from sophomore Kimberly Clarahan, Keota has lost four of their last five.

The Lone Tree Lions will look to continue their strong second half of the season into the playoffs. Seventh-seeded Lone Tree is 13-8 as they prepare to host 9-12 Midland in the 1A Region 3 first round. But the Lions won six of their final eight games in the regular season behind a sturdy defense and the shooting and scoring of Finley Jacque, a freshman guard who is averaging a team-high 14 points per game. Jacque was at her best down the home stretch, averaging almost 18 points a game over the last eight while shooting nearly 47 percent on three-pointers and 53% overall.

The Highland Huskies also boast one of the best players in the area in forward Sarah Burton. The junior is posting almost 17 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots per game for eleventh-seeded Highland, which is 9-12. The Huskies will try to earn redemption at English Valleys, which is 14-7 and beat Highland 54-44 back on January 5th. All high school basketball playoff games tonight begin at 7.
