District Saturday has arrived on the high school wrestling calendar. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats both travel to Williamsburg today to try to qualify for the traditional state tournament.

The Golden Hawks have been off for two weeks, since a 10th place showing at the River Valley Conference meet at West Branch, where they were led by third place finishes for Mose Yoder at 113lbs, Kaden Meader at 170lbs and Terry Bordenave at 195lbs. They are led this year by Meader with 33 wins, followed by Yoder with 30, Bordenave with 25, Quinn Callahan with 21 and Burke Berry with 20.

The Wildcats finished as runners-up at the Southeast Iowa Superconference meet. Russel Coil led the way for the ‘Cats claiming the 285lb championship. Ian Estudillo at 113lbs, Ty Scorpil at 120lbs and Ethan Palmer at 195lbs all finished as runners-up. Coil, a junior, is the lone ranked wrestler in the lineup, checking in at No. 12 at 285 this week in Class 2A according to the final poll from IAwrestle.com. He owns a team best 39 wins this season. He’s followed by Cole Storm with 36, Scorpil with 34, Riley Kaalberg with 33, Jacob Nelson with 27, Palmer with 26 and Bowen Thomson with 25.

Joining these two area schools today in Williamsburg are Eddyville-Blakesburg, Oskaloosa, South Tama, Tipton, West Liberty and the home Raiders. There are 14 total ranked wrestlers competing in today’s field. The top two finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state meet next week in Des Moines. Action starts at 10a.m. and continues all day Saturday at Williamsburg High School.
