The Winfield-Mount Union girls’ basketball team begins a new postseason journey tonight when they host Holy Trinity Catholic in the Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinals, and you can hear all the action on KCII. Top-seeded WMU is ranked eighth in the state in 1A and was undefeated prior to their regular-season finale. The Wolves boast the prowess of senior twin towers Bradie Buffington and Melina Oepping, who are combining to average more than 26 points and 17 rebounds per game, as well as a lights-out defense that gives up less than 26 points per contest. But Winfield-Mount Union has had 2 weeks to stew on their only loss of the season against Mediapolis, and Wolves head coach Mendy McCreight tells KCII Sports it’s resulted in a focused and driven team in practice.

“They have come every day [and] they’ve put in 110 percent effort,” McCreight says. “They’ve had positive attitudes about it. I’ve been impressed with how they’ve come and keep fighting, and we’ve gotten to work on a lot of things.”

WMU will need its elite defense to be at its best against Holy Trinity Catholic, which boasts one of the state’s elite scorers in Mary Kate Bendlage. The junior is averaging 24 points a game and has helped the Crusaders win five straight to improve to 13-8. Winfield-Mount Union looks to continue a long tradition of playoff success in girls’ basketball when they host Holy Trinity Catholic for a spot in the 1A Region 8 semifinals. You can hear the Wolves take on the Crusaders this evening on 106.1 FM KCII and streaming on KCIIradio.com. Coverage begins with the Washington HyVee Pregame Show at 6:30.
