Area girls’ basketball teams will look to make it into their regional tournaments’ final four when they play this evening. One of the few that gets to play at home is the WACO Warriors, who host Burlington Notre Dame in the Class 1A Region 8 quarterfinals. Fourth-seeded WACO has rode better than 22 points per game from senior Ellah Kissell to an 18-4 record. Senior forward Grace Coble has also played well for the Warriors, averaging 11 points and eight rebounds. But, while WACO has won six of their last seven games, the only loss came on February 3rd to the 17-6 Burlington Notre Dame Nikes.

Seventh-seeded Sigourney will try to stay red-hot when they visit North Mahaska in the 1A Region 8 quarterfinals. The Savages are 16-7 thanks to eight straight wins and a stingy defense that gives up only slightly more than 30 points a game. Sophomore Josephine Moore has also been a force for Sigourney, putting up 10 points and 7 rebounds per contest. But the Savages will need everything they have to stop the North Mahaska Warhawks, who are 18-3 and ranked 13th in the state. Sigourney has already lost once to North Mahaska this season, a 48-31 defeat on January 13th.

The eleventh-seeded Highland Huskies already have one road playoff win under their belt, and they look for another by visiting Springville for the 1A Region 3 quarterfinals. Highland has gotten an all-state season from junior forward Sarah Burton, who is averaging nearly 17 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots. But it was Katelyn Waters’ 14 points that proved crucial to beating English Valleys 37-33 in the first round. The 10-12 Huskies will try to topple the 18-4  Springville Orioles.

The Columbus Wildcats had to wait, but their postseason journey begins tonight when they travel to Wilton for the Class 2A Region 6 quarters. Sophomore point guard Ariana Vergara has put together a solid season, averaging eight points, four rebounds and two steals. But the fifth-seeded Wildcats will need to stop a seven-game losing streak to survive and advance. 7-15 Columbus visits a Wilton Beavers pack that is 9-12.
