Members of the Winfield-Mount Union and Columbus FFA groups earned scholarship money for placing in the top 5 at the Iowa Pork Producers Association Youth Swine Judging Contest. The event was held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines earlier this month.
WMU FFA members Carter Lloyd, Eli Miller, Katie Miller, and Quinlyn Smith each earned a $125 scholarship for their third place finish in the Senior Division. The group earned 748 points, only five points behind the top team.
Fourth place was claimed by the Columbus FFA team of Mady Howell, Drew Totemeier, Gabe Totemeier, and Cole Storm. The group received 747 points during the contest, earning each member a $125 scholarship as well.
A total of 706 students from across Iowa participated in this year’s contest, including 162 teams in the Senior Division. Teams competed in a variety of activities, including tests on meat quality and knowledge of pork production, as well as market hog evaluation skills. A total of $4,500 was awarded in total scholarship money amongst the top five teams. For a full list of team scores, click here.
