The Iowa Grizzlies are a youth wheelchair basketball team, the only one of its kind in the state. This Saturday, the Grizzlies along with Adaptive Sports Iowa are hosting a fundraiser in the form of a wheelchair basketball tournament.
The event will be held at the Wellman Parkside YMCA and includes two sessions: the first beginning at 12:30 p.m. followed by the second at 4:30 p.m. Format is 3-on-3 pool play brackets, with three games guaranteed for each team. The winner of each session will then move on to face the Grizzlies varsity team.
Jayden Stafford, a sophomore at Mid-Prairie, and member of the Grizzlies, explained to KCII how the funds received from the event will be used. “It’ll actually go to Adaptive Sports of Iowa. It’ll go back to the organization that basically owns the equipment that we use [and] help other athletes that can’t participate in normal, so to say, track or basketball. It helps go toward their equipment that they may need [to] succeed.”
The fundraiser is open to the public, with spots still available. Teams can hold up to five players, with a cost of $25 dollars per player. Wheelchairs will be provided. There will also be raffles, silent auctions, and concessions throughout the day. For more information, contact Dixie Conrad at 319-863-3032 or email dixieconrad56@gmail.com.
