The Washington City Council met Tuesday. Under new business was discussion and consideration of railroad crossing closures. The conversation ranged from closing some crossing to closing no crossing. Council Member Elaine Moore had this to say, “In the future, and we find out it’s wrong, it’s going to take closing two crossings to reopen a crossing. And so I don’t know if it’s a decision that we can make hastily, and I think that we should think about this very carefully, because this is going to affect generations.” With opposition from the Washington Police Department and Fire Department in regards to public safety with closing crossings, the Council voted unanimously not to close any crossings at this time. Council members Bethany Glinsman and Ila Ernest voted no while stating that they would like to revisit the subject at a later date.
