St. Patrick’s Day is today, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding the public to be safe and take the necessary steps to keep drunk driving off of Iowa’s roadways.

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office is one of several area law enforcement agencies utilizing extra patrol through the weekend. Officers will be out on Iowa’s roads and highways, specifically looking for drunk drivers. Chief Deputy, Brandon Marquardt, advises all Iowans who plan to celebrate the holiday to do the right thing. “Find a ride. Stay where you’re at,” he said. “It isn’t worth it. We go out at these different times and particularly look for intoxicated drivers.”

From 2016-2020, 287 drunk driving deaths were reported in NHTSA’s Region 7, which includes the state of Iowa. Anyone planning on drinking this weekend is encouraged to have a plan, designate a driver, or use ride-sharing apps and public transportation.
