A couple Southeast Iowa Super Conference teams started the new track and field season at an indoor meet at Central College in Pella Thursday and Friday. The WACO Warrior boys got things going for their season Friday on the right foot, especially Simeon Reichenbach. The senior won the 60-meter hurdles in just under nine seconds, and he also had a top distance of 19 feet 10-and-a-half inches to claim the long jump title.

Fellow senior Mason Miller was tied for second in the hurdles and was tied for third in the high jump for the Warriors. Senior Drew Diers took third in the shot put, while WACO’s shuttle hurdles and 55-meter shuttle relay teams were victorious. The four-by-400-meter relay team was third.

The Highland Husky girls had a particularly strong Thursday night at Kuyper Fieldhouse, including winning a unique event. The Huskies took first place in the “California mile,” an eight-runner relay with 200-meter legs. The Highland girls had the top total time of four minutes and 12.69 seconds. Highland also won the 55-meter shuttle relay in 33.78 seconds, and the Husky relay runners were second in the 4-by-200 and 4-by-800. The best individual performance belonged to junior Sarah Burton, who was second in the long jump.

The Lone Tree Lion girls picked up a win in the 4-by-200 relay, while senior Riley Krueger and sophomore Vivian Zaruba were each third in the 60-meter hurdles and high jump, respectively. WACO’s best finish was third place in the 4-by-400. While the Warriors are off until the Steve Roth Relays in Washington Thursday, Highland and Lone Tree will join area teams like Winfield-Mount Union at the coed meet hosted by the Columbus Wildcats later today.
