It was a banner night for the Columbus Wildcat boys’ track and field team at yesterday’s Steve Roth Relays in Washington. With 168 team points, Columbus won the Class C division title and had the second-highest team score across all divisions, only three points behind Mediapolis. The Wildcats had six individual division winners, and the team of sophomore Riley Kaalberg, junior Kaden Amigon and seniors Triston Miller and Jeff Hoback had the top Class C time in the four-by-100-meter relay at 43.2 seconds.

He was runner-up in the 200 meters to Amigon, who took the Class C crown in just under 23 seconds. Miller claimed the division title in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.11 seconds and also cleared five feet eight inches to win the high jump.
Wildcat junior Damian Vergara won the 1,600-meter run in four minutes and 55 seconds, and junior Russell Coil’s top toss of 43’11.5″ was best in the shot put. The 4-by-800 relay team of Vergara and classmates Cael Phillips, Cole Storm and Tim Hills-Carrier also picked up a division win, finishing in just over nine minutes.

Sophomore Kholby Newsom won the 800 meters in Class C in 2:08, while WMU junior Gabriel Hemsworth was best in the 400 hurdles in a few ticks under an even minute. Junior Cam Buffington won the long jump with a top hop of 20’10”, and Wolves junior Abram Edwards teamed up with Newsom, Hemsworth and Buffington to win the distance medley in Class C.
The host Washington Demons were well represented in Class A. Senior Elijah Morris was best in the division with a 100-meter time of 10.79 seconds, also the top time across all classes. Senior Brayden Hartman picked up another win in the shot put, this time reaching 55’6″. Junior Alec Ulin joined Morris and seniors Ethan Patterson and Jude Brown to set a meet record for Class A in the 4-by-200, winning in 1:31. The Washington junior-varsity track team competed in Class C and picked up a couple of wins in relay races. Freshman Kael Williams combined with juniors Casen Evans, Lukus Rickey and Luke Beenblossom to win the 4-by-200 in 1:41. Williams and Beenblossom also joined senior Jack Kleese and sophomore Keider Gomez-Valdez to win the 800 sprint medley for the Demon JV in 1:44.
WACO’s fourth-place finish in Class C was thanks in part to senior Odee Shtefanchuk, who not only won the division in the discus, but his toss of 141’2.5″ was best across all classes. The Warriors also had the best time in the division in the 4-by-110 shuttle hurdles, as sophomores Clayton Miller and Gage Samo and seniors Isaac Oswald and Simeon Reichenbach finished the course in just under 1:08.
