The Winfield Mount Union Individual Events Speech Team sent three students to the State Contest at North Scott High School earlier this month. A successful season continues for the Wolves, with all three earning Division 1 ratings, and one nominated to perform at the All-State Festival.

Allison Humphreys earned the honor for WMU with her performance in the Radio News Announcing event. In the event, students have 30 minutes to prepare a news broadcast, selecting stories from a packet. They must perform a four to five minute broadcast while also including a commercial and breaking news story, which is given to them at a random time.

To perform at the All-State Festival, a student must receive a Division 1 rating as well as nominations from at least two of three judges. Humphreys joins a group of about 5% of competitors in Iowa who earn this distinction.

The 2023 Iowa High School Speech Association’s Individual Events All-State Festival will take place on Monday, March 27 at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. For a complete list of nominations, or a schedule of the festival, click here.
