Since 2015, the STEM Teacher Award has been given to one teacher in six different regions throughout Iowa. This year, the honor in the southeast region went to Lone Tree business and computer teacher, Jessica Howard.
Howard was surprised with the award during an assembly at Lone Tree Community Schools last Thursday. Students, staff, and Howard’s family were in attendance to echo their support as she received a check for $3,000 from representatives at Kemlin Industries, who sponsor the award. The recipient keeps half of that money, while the other half goes towards their classroom.
Howard has taught at Lone Tree for seven years. Wearing multiple hats for the Lion community, she is an advisor for the National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America, while also coaching the E-sports team. Well-deserving of the award, Howard tells KCII what she felt as her name was called. “[I was] immediately just overwhelmed, emotional, so appreciative for people recognizing the hard work that I do. The whole reason why I’m here is for our students and for our kids, and I wouldn’t be able to be here without them.”
The STEM Teacher Award is given to teachers who make a significant difference in the lives of students by providing excellent curriculum, encouraging lifelong learning, and inspiring a passion for STEM beyond the classroom and into the future.
