Over the course of several weeks in February and March, Iowans cast their vote in a search for the best burger in the state. Over 6,000 votes for 509 different restaurants were received by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, with the top 10 named last week.

Making the list was the Fishback & Stephenson Cider House in Fairfield. Located on 33 acres of land off Pleasant Plain Road in the Fairfield city limits, the restaurant began in 2014 in an old barbershop downtown before its continued success required a larger venue.

The variety of burgers offered at the Cider House follow the regulations of the competition, which requires 100% real beef on a bun or bread product. Cattle used to produce their burgers are fed the same crushed apples used to craft their award-winning ciders. Co-owner of Fishback & Stephenson, Annalisa Thompson, was humbled by the recognition, telling KCII, “Especially in a state that does beef so well, I feel like it’s an honor above an honor.”

The next stage of the competition is determining an overall winner. This process involves judges anonymously visiting each restaurant in the top 10 and evaluating their burgers on a number of criteria. The top burger in Iowa will be announced on May 1.
