The Washington Demon track and field team felt the home cooking when they hosted the 47th annual Washington Girls’ Invitational Thursday at Case Field. The Demons were second in team scoring to Mount Pleasant with 113 points, with two freshmen winners leading the way. Iris Dahl was the champion in the 400-meter run with a time of almost one minute three seconds, while Ryen Pepper won the 400-meter hurdles in one minute 13 seconds.

Dahl ran with fellow freshman Leighton Messinger, sophomore Eden Levetzow and senior Grace Voss to win the four-by-400-meter relay for Washington, posting a top time of 4:19. Washington also won the thrower’s relay, as junior Sadie Van Der Molen and seniors Alex Murphy, Ally Rees and Kadence Howell finished the 4-by-100 in just under 1:04.

The team of junior Abigail Kleese and sophomores Lauren Horak, Kendall Hinrichsen and Isabella Lujan was runner-up in the 4-by-800, as were Voss, Levetzow, senior Nevaeh Brown and freshman Carys Miller in the distance medley and Pepper, Messinger and freshmen Leighton Salazar and Nelly Ponce-Cruz in the shuttle hurdles.

Dahl was second in the 800 meters, as was Voss in the high jump. Voss also finished fourth in the 200, while Messinger was third in the 100 hurdles and sophomore Quincy Griffis was fourth in the 3,000. Fourth-place finishes for Rees in the discus toss and Washington’s 4-by-200 and sprint medley teams rounded out a fine day for the Demons, who are off until this Thursday at WACO.
