Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation for 10 Iowa counties this week, ahead of potential flooding along the Mississippi River. The proclamation allows state resources to be utilized should the flooding affect Allamakee, Clayton, Clinton, Des Moines, Dubuque, Jackson, Lee, Louisa, Muscatine, or Scott counties.
Rapid snow melt in the northern states, paired with heavy rains prompted the decision from Reynolds, with some Iowa cities already experiencing some of the effects. The City of Dubuque could see the third highest water levels in its history, expecting to peak at just under 25 feet today.
Iowans who live along the Mississippi River are urged to prepare for possible flooding and have a plan to evacuate if necessary. This includes packing an emergency kit with several days-worth of supplies, staying informed about flood forecasts, and following information issued by local officials.
