Local athletes shined brightly under the lights at Roth Field in Wayland Thursday for the annual Eckstrand Relays. Seven KCII area schools attended.
The boys Class B champs were the home WACO Warriors with 164 points, topping rival Winfield-Mt. Union’s 99. The Warriors crowned eight event champions on the night including triple individual goldfor Simeon Reichenback, winning the 100 in 11.64 seconds, the 110 hurdles in 15.67 seconds and the long jump at 19’1.5″. Mason Miller won high jump at 6’1″ and Odee Shtefanchuk the discus at 143’10”. In relays, the Warrior 4×100 team of Braden Spain, Isaac Oswald, Mason Miller and Reichenback was best in 46.36 seconds, the 4×200 team of Spain, Isaac Oswald, Isaac Rich and Trey Edeker were winners in 1:38.15 and the shuttle hurdle crew of Mason Miller, Louden Huisenga, Clayton Miller and Gage Samo won in 1:07.37. Other top Warrior finishes included seconds for Mason Miller in 110 hurdles, Clayton Miller in long jump, Shtefanchuck in shot put, Huisnga in high jump and the 4×800 team of Kellen Shelman, Edeker, Drake Miller and Eli Cavin. Thirds were Isaac Oswald in the 100, Clayton Miller in the 200, Samo in the 400 hurdles, Drew Diers in shot and the 4×400 team of Rich, Hunter Hughes, Edeker and Huisenga.
The WMU boys were second with 99 points led by three championships. Kohlby Newsom won the mile in 4:44.64, the 4×800 team of Bowen Thomsen, Jacob Nelson, Jaiden Beeding and Alex Venzor finished first in 10:18.04 and the D Med of Eli Miller, Abram Edwards, Ty Scorpil and Newsom was best in 3:49.28. Other top Wolves finishes included runner-up for Kai Malone in the discus, the 4×100 team of Cole Milks, Caleb Giese, Miller and Edwards, the 4×200 team of Geise, Miller, Lane Genkinger and Edwards, the 4×400 team of Sheaden Adams, Thomsen, Preston Prior and Venzor and the sprint medley of Giese, Edwards, Gabriel Hemsworth and Scorpil. Thirds went to Milks in the long jump and Jeff Maish in the two mile.
The Lone Tree boys were sixth with 52 points. Top finish for the Lions was the shuttle hurdle team of Gabe Forbes, Harry Brenneman, Reece Holbrook and Tyce Alt second. Thirds belonged to Ethan Bockelman in the 400, Alt in the 110 hurdles, Andrew Hotz in the discus, the 4×100 team of Emmett Burke, Alt, Brenneman and Bockelman and the 4×200 team of Brody Magruder, Braxdyn McAtee, Forbes and Domonic Garcia.
The Highland Huskies and Hillcrest Academy Ravens each scored six points. The Dogs got their scoring from Jackson Schneider fifth in the 110 hurdles, and Elvin Hernandez fourth in the long jump. The Ravens points came from Jesse Blossom fifth in the 800, fifth for the distance medley of Mason Bender, Isaac Birky, Bryce Bailey and Blossom and sixth for that same team in both the sprint medley and 4×100.
In Class A, the Washington boys placed third with 116 points. Fort Madison won the team title with 140. The Demons had four championship events including Alec Ulin in the 400 at 52.33 seconds, Logan McDole the 800 in 2:12.25, Micah Rees in the two mile in 10:04.44 and the 4×800 team of McDole, Drew Horak, Andrew and Micah Rees in 8:52.88. Runner-up Demons included Tyler Alderton in the mile, Evan Vander Molen in the discus, Andrew Rees in the two mile, Mason Morgan in the 110 hurdles, the 4×200 of Grant Whisler, James Strabala, Kael Williams and Clayton Streeter and the shuttle hurdle with Tayven Stuart, Morgan, Caden Greiner and Cole Vetter. Ulin was third in the 200.
On the girls side of the night, it was a victory lap for head coach Stephanie Haworth and the Demon girls as they took the class A team title. Washington scored 147 points to beat Fairfield’s 128. Three Demon events won gold including Grace Voss in the 800 in 2:31.54, and high jump clearing 5’2″. The 4×800 team of Kendall Hinrichsen, Voss, Lauren Horak and Iris Dahl beat the field in 10:27.15. Runner-up performances included Leighton Messinger in the 200, Voss in the 400, Dahl in the 3000, Taylor Miksch in the discus, the 4×400 team of Eden Levetzow, Carrys Miller, Horak and Hinrichsen and the shuttle hurdle with Ryen Pepper, Hinrichsen, Nelly Ponce-Cruz and Messinger. In third were, Ada Kendall in the 100, Levetzow in the 200 and 400, Horak in the 1500, Quincy Griffis in the 3000, Messinger in the 110 hurdles and Pepper in the 400 hurdles.
In Class B, Lone Tree finished as team runners-up with 118 points to champion Danville. The Lady Lions won three events on the night including Rylee Shield in the 200 in 27.59 seconds, the 4×100 team of Vivian Zaruba, Ava Christofferson, Riley Krueger and Shield in 52.03 seconds and the sprint medley of Sophie Bell, Zaruba, Christofferson and Shield in 1:54.95. Runners-up included Zaruba in the 800, Jazmine Nino in the 1500, Krueger in the 110 hurdles, the 4×400 with Bell, Lindsay Werbach, Avery Lisk and Cate Sexton, the 4×800 with Bell, Bella Pourry, Dalanie Graap and Lisk and the shuttle hurdle with Avery Morarie, Sexton, Werbach and Krueger. Krueger was third in high jump and Hayden Yoder third in shot and disc.
The Highland girls were third with 87.50 points. The Huskies had five events win gold including Sarah Burton with a pair of titles, taking the long jump at 17’7″ and the 100 in 13.15 seconds. Siena Stanerson was the 1500 winner in 6:07.47, Jenna Kraus in discus at 87’11” and the 4×200 team of Lilly Barre, Lorelei Lueck, Burton and McKenzie McFarland in 1:53.10. the 4×1 team of Barre, Burton, Katelyn Waters and McFarland were runners-up and the shuttle hurdle with Halle and Brena Hazelett, Mackenzie Davis and Adelynn Kleopfer was third.
Sigourney finished fourth with 60.5 points. The Savages saw Addison Yates win the 3000 in 12:33.63 and Josephine Moore the shot put at 31′.5″. Reagan Clarahan was runner-up in the 400 hurdles, McKinley Chittick third in the 400 and the 4×800 of Ava Fineran, Mason Clarahan, Jayden Montgomery and Autumn Belvel and the sprint med with Amiya Smallwood, Clarahan, Carly Goodwin and Chittick were third.
The WACO girls were fifth with 47 points. The Warriors had the champion distance medley with McKenzie Vradenberg, Halle Shelman, Zoey Dennler and Elyssa Graber crossing the line first in 4:50.25. Jocelyn Fulton was second in shot put, so was the 4×200 with Peyton Graber, Paige Shull, Hannah Davis and Vradenburg. Graber was third in the 800 and Dennler third in the 400 hurdles.
The Winfield-Mt. Union girls were sixth with 43 points. Keetyn Townsley won the 100 hurdles in 16.94 seconds and the shuttle hurdle team of Josie Nelson, Keyreanna Sharar, Tessa Huston and Townsley won in 1:12.28. Aurey Meeker was third in the 100 and 200 and the 4×100 team of Townsley, Huston, Nelson and Meeker were third.
Hillcrest Academy was seventh with 22 points. Delaney Shaw was second in the 400 and third in the long jump.
