In an all-KCII area matchup of Southeast Iowa Superconference boys soccer foes on the pitch Friday night, it was the upstart WACO Warriors that scored the win in Kalona over Hillcrest Academy 1-0. Tristan Luitjens connected on the game winning goal from 25 yards out in the 29th minute of action, and the Warrior defense made that stand up the rest of the night. Colton Leichty was terrific in goal, the Ravens peppered the WACO junior keeper with 20 shots, and he stopped all of them in preserving the clean sheet and victory. After the match Luitjens and Leichty spoke with KCII sports about the Warriors win. Luitjens said, “Our goal was to string a lot of passes together and work as a team, not try to be individual players. (My goal) felt pretty good, but it was my teammates that set me up for it. It wasn’t just me. This win feels great!”

Leichty added, “(The clean sheet) felt pretty good. I always strive for to get that every game. (My back line) kept pressure on the Hillcrest players with the ball which forced bad shots and bad passes. This win was amazing.”

With the victory, WACO improves to 3-7 this year, Hillcrest falls to 4-5.
