The Washington Demon boys’ golf team started the postseason with a bang. After a runner-up finish last season, the Demons won the team championship at a Class 3A sectional tournament they hosted yesterday at Washington Golf & Country Club, posting a total score of 322 strokes that was 14 better than second-place Oskaloosa and 17 better than third-place Pella.

Washington also boasted the tournament’s individual champion. On a day when scoring was high, Demon junior Roman Roth picked up his fifth tournament victory of the season by shooting a five-over-par 77 over 18 holes. Freshman Rajan Roth was one stroke behind in second.

Freshman Drew Conrad and junior Teague Meyer ended up tied for fifth by each shooting 83, while senior Isaac Vetter cracked the top 10 with an 85. Junior Luke Beenblossom added a 91 for Washington, which wins its 11th event of the season and improves on last year’s runner-up finish at sectionals. That was also the team finish for the Demons at the district tournament in 2021. Next up is a shot at going to state at this year’s district event, which will be held Monday at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella.
