The Washington Demons can celebrate four track and field athletes who were medalists at this year’s Class 3A state championships Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The best finish belonged to senior Brayden Hartman, who finished his career by taking second place in the shot put. Hartman hit a top toss of 57 feet eight inches, which ended up a little more than five inches behind state champion Duke Faley of Dubuque Wahlert. Hartman also competed in the discus toss.
Washington freshman Josh Anderson capped a brilliant first season with a runner-up finish of his own in the 100-meter wheelchair run. Anderson’s time of 19.16 seconds was about a second-and-a-half behind Mid-Prairie’s Jayden Stafford. Anderson also was third in the wheelchair 800 meters and fourth in both the 200 and 400.
The Demons also had two girls’ medalists in senior Grace Voss and freshman Iris Dahl. Voss wraps up her career by finishing seventh in the high jump, while Dahl’s debut season ends with a seventh-place medal in the open 800. 30 total athletes represented Washington at state track this year.
