The Monticello Panthers beat the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team in a defensive battle Monday at Paul N. Bailey Field in Wellman, 3-1. Each team got a single run in the first. Monticello added one in the third to take the lead for good, and scratched across an insurance run in the seventh. The Panthers outhit the Hawks 9-5 in the game. Dylan Roher did it all for Monticello, going two for three at the dish with an RBI, he also got the two inning save out of the pen, walking just one and striking out three. Brady Gogel was the winning pitcher for the Panthers, going five innings, giving up four hits, three walks and one unearned run.
The Mid-Prairie bats had a hard time against the Monticello staff, striking out 10 times as a team. Dylan Henry had a multi hit night for the Hawks, going two for four. Karson Grout, Alex Bean and Collin Miller each had one hit. Grout scored the lone run. Henry took the tough luck loss on the hill for the Golden Hawks, working four frames, giving up four hits, two earned runs, walking three and punching out nine. Carson Pence went three innings out of the pen. The Golden Hawks are now 2-2 on the year and will host Bettendorf Thursday in Wellman.
