The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team wraps up the holiday weekend by starting the River Valley Conference portion of their schedule Monday with a home doubleheader against the Tipton Tigers. The Hawks come into play with a 2-1 record on the year after opening week wins over Mt. Pleasant and Keokuk and a loss to Mt. Vernon. The Hawks are hitting .353 as a team with 24 runs scored. Hannah Sellers, Dakota Mitchell, Sydney Knebel and Olivia Swartzentruber are all .500 or better at the plate. Knebel has recorded the two wins in the circle for Mid-Prairie. Golden Hawk head coach Amy Hartsock-Williams joined KCII Sports last week to talk about her team’s start to the season. “We walked on the field like a whole new team from last year. A year ago, we did not walk out first game like that. We were timid then. We were not timid in our opener last night. We put 12 runs up. It was really good. We had a breakdown on defense in the seventh inning and we allowed them (Keokuk) to score five, but, we will learn from that. Hannah Sellers has been great so far this year. She missed the majority of last year with an injury. So she’s come out blasting. She’s put the ball in play hard.”

Tipton is 0-2 this year after being swept in a doubleheader last week by Iowa City Regina by a combined 25-0 score. The Tigers are hitting .065 as a team through those games with the Regals. Only Avary Calonder came away with hits, going two for three at the plate. Gabrielle Paustian and Carly Langenberg each managed a walk. Calonder and Madison Meier split the time in the circle, finishing with a combined 28 ERA. The Regals hit .548 against the duo with 25 runs, 23 hits, and 10 walks. Mid-Prairie has won 17 of the last 20 games in the series with Tipton.
