Washington Demon softball is still on a roll to start the season after they finished a Southeast Conference series with Mount Pleasant by defeating the Panthers 12-1 in six innings last night in Mount Pleasant. After allowing Mount Pleasant to score first in the opening frame, Washington had to wait until the third inning to finally get on the board. But when the Demons struck, they didn’t slow down, scoring four runs in the third and five in the fourth.

Junior Emery Walton came through with a big night at the plate for Washington. The outfielder had three hits, including a double and a triple, and four runs batted in. Senior Haley Mitchell finished with two runs scored and two driven in, while freshman Leighton Salazar scored three times and stole three bases.

Sophomore pitcher Bella Salazar got her fifth win in the circle, pitching four innings and allowing two hits while striking out five. Washington not only starts conference play 3-0 by getting a series sweep against Mount Pleasant, but the Demons are also 7-2 overall.

Washington will compete in the Iowa City West Classic the next two days. The Demons face Muscatine and Iowa City West today and take on Regina Catholic and Mid-Prairie tomorrow.
