Kalona is the site for an all-KCII area Southeast Iowa Superconference summer doubleheader Friday when the Hillcrest Academy Ravens entertain the Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves. The Raven boys are 4-0 this year. They have yet to play a regulation length contest, punishing their opponents by a combined 66-5 total score this year in mercy-rule shortened matchups. The Ravens were 14-0 winners at Wapello Thursday in just five frames. Hillcrest is hitting .460 with 66 runs and 46 hits. Luke Schrock is hitting a sizzling .643 with nine hits and 11 runs scored, all team best numbers. His brother Liam has also scored 11 times hitting .625, Seth Ours is at .600 this year. That trio are three of six players hitting .400 or better. Everyone in the Raven lineup is hitting at least .333. Freshman Rowan Miller has a team leading 12 driven in. The Hillcrest staff has a microscopic 0.74 ERA. Opponents are hitting only .211 against them. They have given up 15 hits, two earned runs, walked four and struck out 22 in 19 frames. Ours is 2-0 with a 0.78. Josiah Beachy is 1-0 at 1.40 and Phoenix Anderson and Luke Schrock have yet to give up a run.
Winfield-Mt. Union is 1-2 this year, 1-1 in the Superconference, following an 8-7 win last week over Wapello. The Wolves are hitting .260 as a group with 13 runs on 20 hits. Cole Milks is at .571 with four hits and an RBI. Riley Kaalberg has a team best five hits and five driven in. Kohlby Newsome has scored five times. Wolves pitchers have a 5.95 ERA in 20 innings of work with a .151 opponent batting average against, giving up 16 hits, 17 earned runs 25 walks and 21 strikeouts. Andrew Brown is 1-0 with a 6.56 ERA. Trevor Philips has a team best 3.50 mark in four innings. Hillcrest has won 18 of the last 21 in the series, including nine straight with 6-3 and 7-0 victories a season ago.
The Raven girls are 2-2 this year after a 13-1 loss in Wapello Thursday in three innings. The Ravens have a team average at .325 with 25 hits and 26 runs scored. Delaney Shaw is at .556 this year with six runs scored and five hits, all team bests. Kylee Statler leads the Ravens with six RBI. Malia Yoder has worked all 19 innings in the circle with a .202 opponent batting average on 19 hits, 11 earned runs, 10 walks and 30 strikeouts for a 4.12 ERA.
WMU is 1-3 this year after falling 17-1 to Highland on Thursday. For the season, the Lady Wolves are hitting .194 overall, led by Quin Smith at .500 with a team best six hits and five runs scored. Keely Malone has knocked in eight to pace the Wolves. WMU pitchers are led by Smith with 12 innings of work, a .300 opponent batting average against, 21 hits, 35 runs allowed, 12 walks, five Ks and 1-3 record. The Wolves have won eight straight over Hillcrest including 11-7 and 5-0 wins a year ago.
