The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves earned an impressive extra-innings victory over the Highland Huskies Thursday night in baseball, walking off to win 6-5. WMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but Highland had cut the margin to a run one inning later and tied the game by the fourth.

Both teams scored in the fifth to keep the score level before the Wolves took the lead in the sixth. With their backs against the wall in the final inning, the Huskies again knotted the game up at 5. But junior outfielder Cole Milks brought home senior catcher Grant Watson in the bottom of the eighth to give Winfield-Mount Union a walkoff win.

Watson finished with two hits, as did Wolves junior infielder Cael Phillips and sophomore outfielder Kohlby Newson, who combined to score three runs. Senior Preston Prior added three hits for WMU, while freshman Trevor Phillips got the pitching win by throwing the final four innings. Phillips gave up two runs on two hits and three walks while collecting six strikeouts to help Winfield-Mount Union improve to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North.

Sophomore William Dunbar led the Highland lineup with two hits and two runs batted in. Peyton Yeggy pitched all seven-and-two thirds and racked up five strikeouts, but the senior also hit six batters with a pitch as the Huskies suffered their first conference loss of the season and drop to 5-3 overall.
