A pair of area high school baseball teams picked up victories Friday. The Sigourney Savages remained undefeated in conference play by defeating Colfax-Mingo 14-0 in five innings. Sigourney put up three runs in each of the first two innings before dropping an eight-spot in the third to seize complete control.
The Savages took advantage of being walked seven times by Colfax pitching and also knocked out 10 hits, including two doubles and three runs batted in from senior Max Phillips. Senior Ty Shafranek and sophomore Cole McKay each scored twice, while Shafranek and junior Reid Molyneux combined to pitch all five innings and collected five strikeouts each to help Sigourney improve to 5-0 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 7-2 overall. The Savages have a chance to take over sole possession of first place in the conference when they battle undefeated Lynnville-Sully tonight.
The Lone Tree Lions won their first game of 2023 by knocking off Wapello 8-5. After the Indians got two runs right away in the top of the first, the Lions responded by taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom half and then grabbed the game by the horns with four runs in the fourth. Lone Tree is 1-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 1-3 overall. The Lions will host New London this evening.
