lone-tree-3

The Lone Tree softball team put on an offensive showcase last night, as the Lions exploded for a 22-8 win at Winfield-Mount Union. The game was tied at three through the first four innings when Lone Tree scored eight runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Lions were up 14-3 when the Wolves put up five runs in the sixth to pull a little closer, but Lone Tree shut the door by dropping another eight-spot.

Lion sophomore Vivian Zaruba led the lineup with three hits and four runs scored. Sophomores Alex Dautremont and Rylee Shield put up two hits and three runs batted in each, while eighth-grader Addison McCullough added two hits and scored three runs. Fellow eighth-grader Abby Zaruba got the pitching win, piling up eight striketouts in five-and-two-thirds innings.

While Winfield-Mount Union drops to 1-5 in conference play and 1-6 overall, Lone Tree has earned back-to-back wins, having also knocked off New London 15-3 in four innings Monday. The Lions took a 4-0 lead half an inning in, and six runs in the third put the home team in charge for good.

Eighth-grade catcher Olivia Magruder had a team-high three hits, including a double, and scored two runs for Lone Tree. Sophomore Bella Pourry finished with two hits and two RBI, while Vivian Zaruba added two hits and four runs scored for the Lions, who are 2-2 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 4-5 overall ahead of facing Highland tomorrow night.
