Sigourney Savage softball lost a game for just the second time this season with a 2-0 defeat to Cardinal last night. The Comets got both of the game’s only runs right away in the first inning and shut the Savages down the rest of the night, allowing only one hit each to Sigourney’s Rain Barthelman and Kenzi VanDenHeuvel. Junior pitcher Carly Goodwin allowed only one earned run on five hits and piled up 15 strikeouts in a complete game, but it was not quite enough.
Both losses for Sigourney this season have come to Cardinal, but the Savages did get their ninth win of the summer by defeating Montezuma 7-0 Wednesday. Two runs in the opening frame and one in the second were doubled by the end of the third, and Goodwin threw a one-hitter while collecting a whopping 19 strikeouts.
Sophomore Ava Fisch had a team-high three hits and scored two runs for Sigourney, while junior Erin Dawson smacked two doubles and posted two runs batted in. Goodwin and sophomore Josephine Moore had two hits each as the Savages improved to 8-0 in conference play.
Sigourney baseball also beat Montezuma, scoring 11 runs over the last two innings to win 14-1 Wednesday. Savage junior third baseman Jake Moore led the lineup with four hits and two runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Issac Bruns had three hits, including a triple and four RBI, while senior Max Phillips scored twice and drove two in on pair of hits that helped Sigourney improve to 6-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 8-4 overall.
