Winfield-Mount Union nearly pulled off a big road conference victory in baseball Thursday, but the Wolves lost the ultimate pitchers’ duel 1-0 to Louisa-Musactine. The game was, in fact, scoreless until the bottom of the seventh and final inning, when junior Ty Northup’s single brought home junior Matthew Truitt for the Falcon walk-off win.
Despite the defeat, WMU senior pitcher Andrew Brown was still brilliant on the bump, working around 10 hits allowed to keep L&M scoreless through the first six-and-two-thirds innings. Brown also did not allow a walk and struck out six. Junior Cole Milks was the only Wolves player with multiple hits, as Winfield-Mount Union falls to 3-3 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 3-6 overall.
WMU softball also got beat Thursday at Louisa-Muscatine, allowing the Falcons to score five runs in the first on the way to a 13-1 final that took only four innings. Senior Keely Malone had a team-high two hits for the Wolves, who drop to 2-6 in conference play and 2-7 overall.
