The Sigourney Savages are still one of the best in the South Iowa Cedar League in both baseball and softball after defeating BGM in both games Friday evening. Sigourney softball raced out of the gates and scored eight runs in the opening inning, going on to defeat BGM 10-0 in five innings of play.

Junior catcher Erin Dawson paced the Savage lineup with two hits, including a double, and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Rain Barthelman also had two hits, while sophomore pitcher Josephine Moore added two hits at the plate and eight strikeouts in the circle to keep Sigourney perfect in conference play and improve the record of the fifth-ranked team in Class 1A to 10-2.

It took Savage baseball a little longer to seize control of the game Friday, as BGM answered their run in the second inning with one of their own in the third. But Sigourney took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, and three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth put the Bears away in a 7-1 final.

Sophomore shortstop Cole McKay doubled for one of his two hits and finished with one run batted in and one scored. Senior outfielder Max Phillips also had two hits for the Savages, but it was pitcher Caden Clarahan’s dominant effort on the hill that led the way, as the sophomore gave up no earned runs on three hits and struck out 10 to help Sigourney improve to 7-1 in league play and 9-4 overall. Both Savage teams play again tonight at HLV.
