Thursday, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team showed Iowa City Regina, revenge is a dish best served in Kalona. The Golden Hawks bested the No. 1 in Class 2A Regals 3-2. Regina swept the Hawks in a doubleheader Monday by 6-5 and 4-2 scores, but in their third meeting, Mid-Prairie would not be denied. The Hawks brought the power early, jumping on the board in the second when Hannah Sellers led off the frame with a solo blast to put Mid-Prairie up 1-0. The Regals responded with a single tally in the top of the third to knot things at one. Regina took their only lead of the night with another run in the fourth with Gabi Sueppel racing home on a Morgan Gahan RBI double to make it 2-1 Regals. The Hawks had the immediate answer in the bottom half. Sophie Miller reached on an error to lead off the inning and came around to score on hits from Sellers and Olivia Swartzentruber to even the game at two. Things stayed that way until the fifth, when Molly Yoder, Dakota Mitchell and Brenna Jehle all walked to load the bases for Mid-Prairie with no one out. Sydney Knebel stepped in and delivered a sac fly to center to bring in Yoder and put the Hawks on top for good at 3-2. The Regals tried to rally in the final frame, but the Hawks withstood a hit batter and single in the seventh thanks to a key Knebel K and Miller to Sellers put out at first base from behind the plate.
Each team finished with five hits. Sellers and Swartzentruber both finished two for three, Sellers with a homer and single, Swartzentruber with a pair of singles. Mitchell also added a single. Sellers, Miller and Yoder all scored. Knebel collected the win for the Hawks, going the distance, allowing five hits, two earned runs and five Ks. Mid-Prairie is now 11-8 overall and 8-4 in the RVC as they continue play at the Dodger Invitational in Fort Dodge this weekend.
