The Highland Huskies continue to do their best work in conference play this baseball season after they knocked off Wapello 8-4 Thursday night. Highland scored two runs in the third inning to take the lead and added two more in the fifth and one run in the sixth to pull ahead 5-1, a margin that would hold up as both teams scored three runs in the final frame.
Husky senior second baseman Ethan Paisley led the way at the plate with a four-hit night and four runs batted in. Outfielder Tyler Thompson finished with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored, while fellow senior Peyton Yeggy got the win by pitching the first five innings and giving up no earned runs on three hits and a walk. Yeggy also racked up eight strikeouts as Highland improved to 6-3 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 8-8 overall.
Husky softball had a showdown with the first-place team in the Super Conference North, but it was Wapello who struck first Thursday with a run in the first inning. Highland would not score until the sixth and fell 3-1, getting only one hit each from sophomore Lilly Barre, junior Sarah Burton and seniors Abbi Stransky and Jessica Kraus. Kraus picked up seven strikeouts in six innings pitched, but the Huskies still fell to 6-3 in conference play and 11-7 overall.
